Erik Jones: prima personale in Europa alla Dorothy Circus Gallery

The illusory serenade of the imagination playing before your eyes is the work of Erik Jones. The portraits are dazzling celebrations exhibited with elegant bouquets of color dressing the figures within. The body of work can be defined as something like a dream you don’t want to lose upon waking.

Così viene definita l'arte di Erik Jones, giovane artista e illustratore statunitense, laureatosi nel 2007 il Ringling College of Art and Design, che ha raggiunto la fama a Brooklyn e New York  a partire dal 2009 esponendo in moltissime conventions di arte e pop-culture e collaborando con la Thinkspace Gallery.

I soggetti femminili al centro delle opere di Erik Jones esprimono quello che lo stesso artista definisce "conceptual fashion design" dove il realismo si mescola a una visione del tutto futuristica della forma dei corpi (e dei volti) e della loro bellezza. Dietro ogni opera ci sono diversi processi e diversi materiali che si sovrappongono e che contribuiscono alla realizzazione delle sue opere.

My whole process starts with a photo shoot or a collection of various photos to get inspired from. I’ll spend about a day or 2 editing, finding positions, faces, hands, etc. that I’ll end up frankensteining together to create the perfect reference. Once I have a figure reference, I start the sketching/conceptual process. Which starts with a loose thumbnail on paper then refined digitally. I’ll build shapes on top of the figure, methodically picking and choosing forms with color. I build on top of the figure as if they were wearing these shapes. I’ll also create patters with the shapes to move your eye around in a structured way. Despite all the clutter and chaos in these newer works, there is something soothing and comfortable in each piece, at least I feel there is. I believe it’s the patterns that you’re subconsciously finding that keep it from being completely chaotic and overwhelming to look at.

Tra gli artisti che hanno influenzato il suo stile ricordiamo i pittori pinup George Petty, Alberto Vargas, Gil Elvgren, ed altri illustratori degli anni ’60 che si sono maggiormente concentrati sulla figura femminile, come ad esempio Coby Whitmore e Robert McGinnis.

Dal 24 Ottobre al 1 Dicembre 2015 sarà possibile ammirare le sue opere e il suo stile presso la Dorothy Circus Gallery di Roma. La presenza di questo artista presso la famosa galleria romana rappresenta una tappa importante in quanto è la prima personale in Europa di Erik Jones.
